What should I expect in my first Pilates class?

Your first Pilates class at The Village Well is designed to feel supportive, clear, and welcoming—not intimidating or overwhelming.

If you’ve never taken Pilates before, or if it’s been a while, you’re not behind. Many people arrive with questions, curiosity, and a little uncertainty. Because of that, we’ve built our experience to meet you exactly where you are.

Pro tip: As a beginner to the studio, we recommend you take our WellFoundations class, designed to make you feel successful from the start.

Before class begins

When you arrive, your instructor will help you get oriented to the space and the equipment. The reformer may look intimidating at first, but essentially it is just a pulley system with resistance directed by spring tension.

In WellFoundations, we walk through setup step by step. This includes how to adjust the reformer, where to place your feet and hands, and how to move safely and comfortably. You’re always encouraged to ask questions, and there’s no rush to “figure it out” immediately.

If you’d prefer extra guidance before joining a group class, we also offer 30-minute mini one-on-one sessions. These short, private sessions are designed to help you get acclimated to the reformer, learn basic settings, and feel more confident walking into class.

During class

You can expect:

  • Clear verbal cues explaining what you’re doing and why

  • Hands-on adjustments when helpful

  • Options throughout class so you can adjust based on how your body feels

  • Frequent reminders to breathe, slow down, and stay present

Meanwhile, instructors focus on alignment and awareness rather than perfection. You’re never expected to keep up with anyone else in the room.

What you don’t need to worry about

You don’t need prior Pilates experience.
You don’t need to know the names of movements.
You don’t need to perform, push through discomfort, or prove anything.

Resting is allowed. Modifying is encouraged. Pausing to reset is always okay.

Whether you start with a group class or a short one-on-one session, the goal is the same: to help you feel supported as you learn.

After class

Most people leave their first class feeling more aware, grounded, and connected to how their body moves. While the work can feel challenging, it’s also steady and thoughtful.

Over time, many clients notice improved coordination, greater confidence with movement, and a deeper understanding of their own patterns. However, the first step is simply showing up and getting familiar with the practice.

Your first Pilates class isn’t about doing everything “right.”
It’s about beginning. Book your class today!
